Kutlu Kaya

Postdoctoral Associate in Psychiatry Yale School of Medicine, United States

Dr. Kutlu Kaya is a postdoctoral associate in Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, where Dr. Kaya investigates brain hemodynamics, metabolism, mitochondrial functioning, and bioenergetics in mood disorders. Dr. Kaya earned his PhD in Medical Physiology from the Faculty of Medicine at Hacettepe University in 2022. His doctoral research was carried out at Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, where Dr. Kaya developed expertise in near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Dr. Kaya’s current work uses broadband NIRS to measure the oxidized cytochrome-c-oxidase (oxCCO) alongside hemodynamic signals and integrates these measures with calibrated functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy to characterize brain-wide mitochondrial activity and oxidative metabolism. The aim is to characterize mitochondrial function and its relationship to cerebral oxygen delivery and utilization in mood disorders. Dr. Kaya is a recipient of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology Global Scholarship and the International Society for Bipolar Disorders Metabolic Focus Travel Award.
